The 8 Pelicans

Updated: Jul 31, 2023

I recently visited friends in Charleston, SC. It was a beautiful city and reminded me so much of New Orleans. We had a yummy lunch at a restaurant in Mt. Pleasant, SC on Shem Creek which empties into the intercoastal waters. As we sipped iced tea, the fishing boats were docking and pelicans were arriving by the, well I'd say hundreds, but you know that's a bit exaggeration, it was more like half a hundred. Anyway, we were also entertained by a half dozen or so dolphins bobbing up and down the creek. The afternoon sunset was quite beautiful, relaxing and a perfect end to the day.

I captured a picture of these eight brown pelicans swimming after feasting on discarded fish and shrimp from the boats. It was quite a site to watch the pelicans and dolphins waiting patiently for an afternoon meal thanks to the fisherman. These pelicans were beautiful birds and not one flew away hungry. The scene reminded me of Mardi Gras when the crowd yells, "Throw me something mister," and no one goes away empty handed.

Why a picture of only 8 pelicans you ask? Good question.

Well, as you view the second picture you will note it came from "Rowing on the Bayou" and there were only eight pelicans, eight blue pelicans.

When the blue pelican flew away, seven more flew by.

Can you count how many blue pelicans we saw in the sky?

If you counted eight, then you are right.

Seeing eight blue pelicans was a beautiful sight.

Thanks for stopping by.

Renée
